Maybe he had to ‘go along to get along’ as they say. I must say that I was shocked to learn that Orwell once lived in such squalid conditions. I did end up finishing it but I would say as Orwell does in the beginning of the book that the life of the downtrodden is really boring. I really should’ve read a book by someone else and stopped reading so many rubbish books when I uu a teenager!

By the final page of this book I was totally ready to move beyond this sorry sap’s poor and worthless existence. One favourite scene so far is when Boris takes the author to a cobbler to ask for money. As much as I love Orwell, this book was a severe let down.

The author seems arrogant and irvel descriptions are depressing. This book reminded me of a more depressing “Tale of Two Cities.
