I recently re-read this classic work by Kautsky after I had developed an interest in the historicity of Jesus. I do intend foundztions to read a more recent half-century rather than century old book on the decline of the Empire, from a similar materialist perspective, Perry Anderson’s Passages from Antiquity to Feudalismwhich has been on my shelves since the kautskt political days of my youth.
