Thought the book was a good read. I believe that so-called psychological thrillers and I must come to a conclusive parting of the ways. View all 6 comments. Was not nearly as interesting as the trailer makes the TV series trailer out to be. The photo is actually a cut out of composer Edvard Grieg copied onto a picture of Roosevelt. As mystery books go, yeah, I will keep the three stars… For those who aren’t familiar with late 19th century language, alien is what the mentally ill were called at the time.
Ugh, what a disappointment this one was. Though there is pretty much zero character development of any of these detectives or their personal lives, there are multiple occasions where guys are checking out girls.
So, for serial killer novel fans, you’ve got something that will certainly hold your interest. Or listen to the audio version. The suspense builds right to the end and an exciting confrontation between Kreisler and Moore with the killer.
I, like the author Caleb Carr, have been a fan of Theodore Roosevelt’s and to find him walking throughout the pages of this book has been wonderful. Not to mention the rather gory descriptions of corpses. Fast-paced and gripping, infused with a historian’s exactitude, “The Alienist” conjures up the Gilded Age and its untarnished underside: But once the case got going, the book hit a better stride, and I started quite enjoying the discussions of psychology and the budding forensic field.

Caleb Carr failed with The Alienist. It is all a matter of subjective interpretation, but Drood appeals to a more high-brow reading audience, while The Alienist is more of an ‘omnivore’, mainstream book.
